Race Report For Oulton Park 12th April (round 2, Wirral 100 MC)
First race of the season was a gabble with the weather, when the sun was shining it was nice although there were plenty of odd showers making tyre choice tough.
Start of the day and out for practice and we were on full wets as the track was completely soaked.
First race of the day was after dinner and i was 26th on the grid, as we had used the wets in the morning for the practice and with the out bursts of rain i decided to keep the wets on as i thought the track would be soaked, although once out for the warm up lap i knew i had made a mistake as the whole track was now completely dry, but looking around on the grid there was a huge mix of what tyres were being used.
Off for the start and i felt pretty good with the bike even though i had wet tyres on, i ran a decent pace but was hesitating on the corners as i didnt want to melt the tyres, finished the race in 16th and was only 1 second of last years dry personal best lap time so for the first race i was pretty happy and considering first time out on the new bike i wasnt going to complain.
Second race of the day i qualified for the championship race in 28th which wasnt too bad considering the qualifying race i was on the wrong tyres.
For race 2 the weather had stayed dry so there was no question about using the dry tyres for this race.
Off from the start and i got a decent start and was feeling confident passing a few people, the end of lap 2 there was a bike down and on fire so was pretty obvious the race was going to be stopped and after a few corners it was. (later found out before the race was stopped i was in 14th place, typical)
Because of the incident the race was restarted, so back on the grid in the same position to start again although the laps were cut down to 4 laps.
Again off we go, didnt get a good a start as before but still managed to pass some people, after the first lap i was stuck behind #31, with him being alot more confident on the brakes than me it was hard to get past, although i knew that he was holding me up in the corners as he had no were near the same corner speed i had so i knew he was slowing me down, i continued behind him making moves trying to out brake him and get past and finally got past and stayed past on the final lap and finished 19th overall which i was mega happy about as i was the fastest novice by far.
So all in all a great day with no major problems apart from the unpredictable weather.
And also just a thank you to andy and glyn for coming to say hello and well done to Neil Aslkaksen in the F400 class for his results first time at oulton park.
